Why go to Cordoba  for a perfect one day trip?

Cordoba was one of the greatest cities of the medieval world, rivalling Constantinople in the east with its palaces and mosques – the grandest of which, the Mezquita, is still one of the wonders of Europe. Now, the city is smaller and less touristy than its Andalusian neighbours Granada and Seville, and is all the more charming for that.

All its attractions accessible on foot, and it’s a joy to wander among the squares of the old town, and the alley-thin streets of the old Jewish quarter, the Juderia, Eating out is a case of grazing at the countless tapas bars, where you’re as likely to be surrounded by locals as tourists. Ferociously hot in mid summer, Cordoba’s climate is at its best in autumn.

Any bar or restaurant you stop to eat or drink is fabulous in Cordoba, we highly recommend these one:

Bodegas Campos, Calle Lineros n
umero 32
(957 49 75 00);Bodegas Campos began operations in the world of wine in 1908. It is located near the Julio Romero de Torres Museum in Axerquía, the old Arab district where according to tradition Christian knights rode in at night to take over Cordoba. The identity mark of their menu is constant innovation and the study and use of new textures, flavours and experiences. Highlights include their season vegetables, traditional stews, deboned oxtail with creamy potatoes…
Their desserts represent reinvented tradition – dishes as always with a new spin: wine poached pears with cinnamon ice-cream and orange ice-cream with Arbequina olive oil. We love the bar.

Restaurant El Churrasco (00 34 957 290 819); Calle Romero 16 The grilled meats are the speciality here, particularly the beef steaks, but the fish is also excellent. The formal-style restaurant spreads over several small rooms, each decorated in different style; ask for a tour of the wine cellars next door. About 40 euros a head, booking essential. If you can’t get a table, nearby Casa Pepe de la Juderia, also in Calle Romero, has very good tapas and a restaurant above.

Taverna San Miguel (Casa el Pisto), Plaza San Miguel 1 (00 34 957 478 328); locals far outnumber tourists in this traditional-style tapas bar, with some tables in the attractive square outside. Lemon anchovies are particularly good (4 euros).

Horno San Luis, a tiny café near Mosquee-Cathedral at Calle Cardenal Gonzalez, 73. Really good Salmorejo/gazpacho (6.50 euros), Nuts hummus (6.0 euros), home-made desserts are a must.
